Weir U Žida is a water control structure on the Ostravice River in Staré Město, built from reinforced concrete and stone. The installation manages water flow through the river system and helps maintain consistent water levels.
The weir on the Ostravice was rebuilt in 2019, when the damaged old sluice was replaced by a reinforced concrete structure with a fish pass on the right bank. The work aimed to restore migration for aquatic animals and stabilise the riverbed. It stands at the 25.3 km mark of the Ostravice, near the Morávka confluence.
Locals and visitors gather here to fish and observe the river, making it a social spot along the Ostravice. The weir has become part of the everyday landscape where people interact with the waterway.
You can reach this weir on foot and the area around it is accessible to visitors year-round. The best time to visit is during stable weather when the riverbanks are safe to walk along.
Concrete surfaces on the weir carry paintings designed by children from the primary school in Staré Město. The 2019 rebuild also added a fish pass on the right bank, replacing the damaged older weir.
