Zámecký pivovar v Jindřichově Hradci

The castle brewery in Jindrichův Hradec is a stone building with Renaissance features located next to a 16th-century mill along the Nezarka River on the city's north side. The complex comprises several connected structures arranged along the riverbank that reflect the historic character of the site.

The brewery was founded in 1561 as part of the castle grounds and grew into a major production facility. By the late 19th century it was producing over 20,000 hectoliters of beer annually, marking its importance to the local economy.

The composer Bedrich Smetana's father managed the facility and lived there with his family from 1831 to 1835, creating a personal link to one of Czechia's most celebrated musical figures. This connection gives the place a special role in the region's cultural memory.

Renovation work has been underway since spring 2024, with plans to restore brewery operations and create a multifunctional hall for public events. Visitors should check conditions beforehand, as access may be limited during construction.

After beer production ended in 1967, the building served for decades as a warehouse for the Fruta company before a major fire in 2011 caused significant damage. This event prompted the current restoration plans.
