Newberry County Memorial Hospital, historic hospital building located at Newberry, Newberry County, South Carolina, United States
Newberry County Memorial Hospital is a former hospital located on Hunt Street in Newberry, South Carolina. Built in red brick with Colonial Revival style architecture, it served as the main medical center from 1925 until a newer facility opened in 1973, and the complex included supporting structures like a nurse's home, laundry, and boiler plant.
The hospital was founded in 1925 to bring medical care close to home, as residents previously had to travel to larger cities like Columbia or Charleston for treatment. In 1937, The People's Hospital opened to serve the African American community under Dr. J.E. Grant Sr., and in 1952 both institutions merged to create a larger unified facility.
The hospital served as a place of care and healing where community members came together during important moments of their lives. Local residents remember it as a vital part of their shared history and daily experience.
The building is protected as a historic structure and the public typically cannot enter without special arrangements, as preservation is the priority. Visitors can view the exterior red brick Colonial Revival architecture from the street to see what early 20th century medical facilities looked like.
The building was designed by architect James Calvin Hemphill, who created many distinctive structures throughout the region in his signature style. Local builder W.T. Livingstone oversaw construction, resulting in a noteworthy blend of artistic design and skilled craftsmanship from the early 1920s.
