The Merrimack Manufacturing Company established this industrial complex in 1900, constructing a cotton mill that employed 1,600 workers at its peak in 1955.
The district represents early 20th-century industrial community planning with New England architectural influences adapted to the southern United States.
Visitors can explore the remaining 269 mill houses that display various architectural styles from the industrial period through self-guided walking tours.
The district features the Merrimack Hall, a former company store transformed into a performing arts center with programs for individuals with special needs.
