Buffalo Harbor State Park is a public recreation area on the shore of Lake Erie in Erie County, New York State. It offers boat slips, launch ramps, fishing spots, picnic areas, and a playground, all arranged along the waterfront.
Buffalo Harbor State Park was created in 2014 from part of a 340-acre transfer of land from the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority to the Empire State Development Corporation. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation was scheduled to take over operations in November 2014, and the park opened to the public on May 24, 2015. Its $15 million development was part of an effort to revitalize Buffalo's outer harbor.
The park sits along the edge of Lake Erie and draws locals who fish, walk, or simply watch the water from the shore. The mix of boats at the docks and families at the picnic tables shows how connected everyday life in Buffalo is to the lake.
The park has ample parking for both cars and boat trailers, making it easy to arrive by road. Those coming by boat will find all the facilities they need right at the marina.
The park is one of 80 New York State Parks in the path of totality for the 2024 solar eclipse, where the sun was fully covered for 3 minutes and 46 seconds. Its 1,000-slip marina, boat launches and fish cleaning station occupy the former NFTA Small Boat Harbor.
