Winona Lake Historic District, Historic district in Winona Lake, Indiana, United States.
Winona Lake Historic District is a collection of residential, religious, and civic buildings situated along the eastern shore of Winona Lake. The structures feature Colonial Revival, Arts and Crafts, and Neo-Classical design elements from various periods.
The area was first established as Spring Fountain Park in 1888 and became a religious center when purchased by the Presbyterian Church of Indiana in 1894. This transition led to the development of facilities and structures supporting religious gatherings.
The district became a hub for religious gatherings and hosted traveling preachers who drew crowds seeking spiritual guidance. This religious focus shaped how residents lived together and how visitors experienced the community.
The district is best explored on foot along its main streets where visitors can see preserved structures including the Billy Sunday Home Museum and Westminster Hall. Walking allows you to notice architectural details and get a feel for the neighborhood layout.
The location was originally chosen because of natural artesian springs that bubbled up from beneath the ground and drew people seeking their healthful properties. These underground springs were the original reason the site attracted early developers.
