U.M. Rose School

The U.M. Rose School is a two-story, U-shaped brick structure with Colonial Revival details located at the intersection of Izard and West 13th Streets. The building's design centers on a courtyard and showcases the architectural standards of the early 1900s within the Philander Smith College Historic District.

The school was built in 1915 under the design of Arkansas architect Charles L. Thompson. In 1988, it received designation on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its importance to the region's built heritage.

The building now serves as the James M. Cox Administration Building at Philander Smith College and remains a focal point for campus activity. It reflects the educational aspirations that shaped the institution and continues to be part of the college community's daily life.

The building is located at the corner of Izard and West 13th Street in central Little Rock and is easy to spot within the campus. Since it serves as an administrative center, access may be restricted, but the exterior architecture is fully visible from the surrounding streets.

The Arkansas Democrat newspaper praised the building in 1916 as the finest school structure ever constructed in Little Rock. This early recognition highlights how remarkable the architectural execution was for its time.
