Heer's Department Store
Heer's Department Store is a seven-story building in Springfield, Missouri, clad in cream-colored terra cotta panels that command attention through sheer size. The interior originally featured a rooftop garden, a tea room, a theater, and an observation deck that made it far more than just a place to shop.
The shop was founded in 1869 as a small dry goods store by Charles H. Heer and grew over decades into a leading retailer. The current building was constructed in 1915 following a devastating fire in 1913 and was built with advanced construction methods of its time.
The store's name comes from Charles H. Heer, a German immigrant who opened the original shop in 1869. For generations, the building served as a gathering place where neighbors met, accessed beauty services, and enjoyed free theater and musical performances.
The building sits in downtown Springfield within the Public Square Historic District, making it easy to explore on foot. The facade and historic details are clearly visible from the street, though the interior now serves as apartments and retail space.
The building featured an observation deck with a tower on the roof from which visitors could overlook the city - a rare feature for a department store. After closing in 1995, it was converted into luxury apartments in 2015, preserving its role as a city landmark.
