J C Murphey Lake, body of water
J.C. Murphey Lake is a shallow reservoir in Newton County, Indiana, situated within the Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area. The basin is surrounded by open fields, forests, and distant sand dunes, with access to boat ramps, fishing piers, and marked hiking trails throughout the property.
The reservoir was constructed in 1951 to provide resting places for migratory birds. Between 2022 and 2024, it underwent major renovation work that removed sediment, installed new fish habitats, and planted native vegetation.
The lake is named after J.C. Murphey and sits within the Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area, where visitors come to watch birds and experience nature. The place is used regularly by local hunters, anglers, and nature enthusiasts who return to observe seasonal changes and wildlife movements throughout the year.
Access is through designated areas with a boat ramp, fishing piers, and hiking trails, where only electric motors and small boats are permitted. Visitors should wear life jackets, swimming is not allowed, and access may be restricted before waterfowl hunting seasons.
The water is intentionally drained and refilled to help plants and animals thrive and improve water quality. This management system helps the lake stay healthy and support more wildlife.
