North Avenue Beach is a sand beach on the shore of Lake Michigan in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, Cook County. The beach runs along a paved lakefront trail and is anchored by a large building shaped like an ocean liner, with upper decks, porthole windows, changing rooms, and food options inside.
The land was originally part of a cemetery from the 1830s, converted into public parkland for health reasons. The site grew through landfill work during the 1930s with New Deal funding, and the current ship-shaped building replaced an older structure in 1999.
The lakefront trail running alongside the beach is used daily by joggers, cyclists, and rollerbladers, and it gives the place a steady, active rhythm. In summer, open yoga sessions and volleyball tournaments take place on the sand, open to anyone who wants to join.
The beach is open daily during summer, with lifeguards on duty from late morning until evening. Parking is available on site but fills up fast on weekends, so public transit is a practical option for most visitors.
Free beach wheelchairs are available to borrow with a valid ID, making the sand accessible for people with limited mobility. The beach is also listed as a proposal spot, since the open view over the lake with the city skyline behind it draws many couples.
