Rabban Hormizd Monastery

Rabban Hormizd Monastery is a cave monastery located in the mountains near Alqosh. The complex contains more than forty individual chambers carved into the rock face, with a main church dedicated to the archangels Michael and Gabriel spanning two levels.

The monastery was established around 640 and became an important seat of religious authority over the centuries. From the 16th century through the 18th century, it served as the residence for major church leaders of the region.

The site served as a spiritual center for the Syriac Christian community for many generations. The carved chambers and church spaces show how monks shaped their daily worship and study within the mountain itself.

The site is located in a mountainous area and requires good physical fitness to explore thoroughly. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and tight passages within the carved caves.

The monastery once housed an important collection of ancient texts written in Syriac, used by generations of scholars. However, these valuable documents suffered significant damage and loss through looting in 1828.
