Baghdad International Airport, International airport in Al-Karkh District, Iraq
Baghdad International Airport is an aerodrome in Al-Karkh District, located roughly 16 kilometers west of the city center. Two passenger terminals receive travelers, and several runways serve both civilian and military flights.
The French firm Spie Batignolles built the facility starting in 1979, but the war with Iran delayed the full opening until 1982. Later conflicts damaged parts of the infrastructure, which were gradually renewed over the following decades.
The hub serves as home base for Iraqi Airways and brings together passengers from many countries. The name recalls the city's historical role as a trading place between East and West.
Buses, taxis, and rental cars connect the facility to the city, with advance booking advisable due to local security conditions. Travelers should allow extra time for checks and inquire about current conditions before arrival.
The facility houses a separate military section called New Al Muthanna Air Base, operated alongside the civilian areas. This divided operation allows both commercial flights and air force missions on the same grounds.
