Imam Ali Mosque

The Imam Ali Mosque is a shrine and mausoleum in the Old Town of Najaf, Iraq, marked by its domed structure and two minarets. The inner courtyards with marble floors surround the central shrine, which is enclosed by a gold-clad facade and latticed walls.

The first structure arose in the 8th century above the tomb and later underwent several destructions by wars and fires. The current building dates from the early 17th century and has since been expanded through renovations with goldwork and mosaics.

Pilgrims use the upper section of the inner courtyard for meditation and communal prayer beneath open arcades. Many worshippers touch the gilded gates of the shrine out of respect for the deceased and remain silent in the shade of the columned walkways.

Visitors should wear modest clothing and remove shoes before entering the interior spaces. The complex is accessible during daytime hours and best avoided during prayer times when particularly many people are present.

Inside there is a collection of old Quranic manuscripts in a separate room with climate-controlled air to preserve the writings. Some of these copies are said to date from the 9th century and display early calligraphic styles of the Islamic world.
