Kuara

Kuara consists of two earthen mounds and surrounding ridges located near a dried canal close to the Euphrates River. Together these two elevated areas contain the archaeological remains of what once stood here.

The settlement began around 2500 BCE during the Early Dynastic period and became an important seaport. Its location allowed trade connections between Mesopotamia and the Persian Gulf.

According to local tradition, this was believed to be where the god Marduk was born, and temples here honored various deities. These religious buildings shaped the daily life of people who worked and worshipped in this place.

The site is located roughly 50 kilometers southeast of Ur and is reachable on foot. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven ground.

This former port city now sits far from water because the Euphrates shifted over millennia due to silt deposits. This transformation shows how powerful geological changes have reshaped the region over time.
