Qermez Dere, Archaeological site near Tal Afar, Iraq.
Located on the northwestern outskirts of Tell Afar, Qermez Dere spreads over 100 meters by 60 meters, forming a low tell of 2 meters height.
The settlement dates back to 8500-7900 BC, representing a significant Early Aceramic Neolithic period site discovered during rescue operations in the 1980s.
The excavated structures reveal primitive mudbrick construction techniques, with rounded corners and non-structural clay columns indicating early architectural developments.
The site sits near the Greater Zab River, approximately 50 kilometers west of Mosul, at the intersection of two ecological zones.
Researchers uncovered a complete one-room semi-subterranean dwelling that differs from typical Neolithic round or square architectural patterns.
