Shibaniba, Archaeological site near Bashiqa, Iraq
The archaeological site of Shibaniba extends across 30 acres of land and contains a large mound with multiple layers of ancient settlements.
Excavations at Shibaniba began in 1850 with Austen Henry Layard, followed by extensive research between 1930 and 1934 by the University of Pennsylvania team.
Research teams discovered ninety-one Middle Assyrian tablets at Shibaniba, along with copper weapons inscribed with cuneiform characters and faience items.
The archaeological mound divides among eighteen different landowners, including a Jacobite church, which affects access and research coordination at the site.
Studies in 2022 connected Shibaniba with the Ur III period city of Šimānum, potentially identified as Asimānum during the Akkadian Empire period.
