Johor Bahru Old Chinese temple

Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple is a Chinese place of worship on Jalan Trus featuring three prayer halls, white outer walls, and a large incense pot at the entrance. Potted plants decorate the grounds throughout, creating a lived-in and tended feel.

The temple was founded between 1870 and 1880 with support from Sultan Abu Bakar, led by Tan Hiok Nee of the Ngee Heng Company. It grew from the need to serve the expanding Chinese population settling in the city during that era.

The temple brings together five Chinese ethnic groups—Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, and Hainanese—each worshipping their own deities within the same building. Visitors can observe how different communities share this space and maintain their separate practices side by side.

The site sits in central Johor Bahru near City Square mall and is reachable by various transportation methods. Visitors can drop by at any time during the day, making it easy to fit into your schedule.

Each year during the first lunar month, a Chingay parade takes place with deity processions stretching across four days. The celebration draws thousands of participants and stands as one of the city's biggest festive events.
