Planetarium Sultan Iskandar, Planetarium in Kuching, Malaysia

Planetarium Sultan Iskandar is a planetarium in Kuching, Sarawak, occupying the eighth and ninth floors of the Kuching Civic Centre. Its white dome, 15 metres in diameter, seats 172 people and holds four projectors plus a German-made Zeiss projector that displays 5,000 stars, a moon and special effects. The first floor houses the Petrosains science centre, opened in 2019.

Built in 1988 at a cost of RM 3 million alongside the RM 30 million Kuching Civic Centre, the planetarium was officiated on 19 January 1989 by Sultan Iskandar of Johor, then Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and opened to the public on 1 March 1989. It was the first planetarium constructed in Malaysia. Its first curator was a German citizen, Adolph Kunert, who held the post for one year before returning home.

The planetarium runs school-holiday space science programmes, astronomy camps, astro quizzes, Astronomy Day events, exhibitions and roadshows, and it sent an entourage to observe a solar eclipse in Sabah. It also offers industry training for students of Information Technology, Science and Social Science. Its first curator was a German, Adolph Kunert, appointed for one year.

The planetarium occupies the eighth and ninth floors of the Kuching Civic Centre, reached by lift; the ninth floor holds the Zeiss projector beneath the 15-metre white dome, which seats 172. The first floor houses the Petrosains science centre opened in 2019, and the second floor the civic centre. Shows run in a darkened hall, so arrive before the doors close.

The first curator was Adolph Kunert, a German citizen appointed for one year before returning home. The planetarium's first screening was a documentary about the Moon made by a professor from the National University of Malaysia. It also runs industry training for IT, science and social science students.
