Església de Sant Romà dels Vilars, Catholic church in Els Vilars d'Engordany, Andorra

Església de Sant Romà dels Vilars is a rural pre-Romanesque chapel of the 10th century standing at 1,861 m at the foot of the Padern peak. Its single rectangular nave, 9 m by 4.63 m with 64 cm thick walls of limestone and llicorella bound with lime mortar, ends in a quadrangular apse separated by a presbyteral arch. A two-storey body with a covered porch and choir above was built against the west side using the slope, and a single-eyed bell gable with a rounded top rises from the west wall.

This structure was built in the 10th century and remains one of the earliest buildings dedicated to worship in the region. Its survival through the centuries shows how central it was to the mountain communities that used it.

This church shows how a small mountain community built its own place of worship using simple methods and local stone. The basic construction tells you something about daily life and what people valued in this remote area centuries ago.

The church stands at 1,861 metres at the foot of the Padern peak, above Els Vilars d'Engordany. The nave floor slopes by 55 cm, so watch your footing inside. The square door opens onto the south facade, and the west end holds a two-storey body with a covered porch and the choir above.

The apse has an unusual trapezoidal shape that narrows slightly from the opening toward the back wall. This feature is characteristic of early mountain churches and shows how builders worked with limited resources and tools.
