Al Maktoum International Airport, International airport in Dubai South, United Arab Emirates
Al Maktoum International Airport is an airport in Jebel Ali, an industrial zone of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The facility features a 4,500-meter (14,763-foot) runway and serves mainly cargo traffic alongside some passenger routes.
The airport began operations in June 2010 with cargo services and expanded to passenger flights in 2013. This development was part of a plan to increase aviation capacity in Dubai.
The facility takes its name from Dubai's ruling family and reflects the emirate's approach to modern aviation in the Jebel Ali industrial zone. Cargo aircraft dominate operations, underlining the site's role in international trade.
The facility is located roughly 37 kilometers (23 miles) southwest of central Dubai and is accessible via major highways. Travelers should allow extra time for the journey, as the airport sits on the city's outskirts.
Expansion plans call for five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates to handle 260 million passengers annually by 2030. This planned capacity would make the facility one of the world's largest airports.
