Muweilah, Archaeological site in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
Muweilah is an archaeological site in Sharjah containing the remains of multiple buildings arranged within a walled enclosure from the first millennium BC. The central area shows the foundations of an administrative structure with column bases and adjoining rooms that served different functions in the settlement.
The settlement developed during the Iron Age and was occupied between the 9th and 6th centuries BC, when multiple communities expanded across the Arabian Peninsula. Evidence from different building phases shows how the occupation and use of the site changed over time.
The settlement shows signs of active trade connections across the region, with goods arriving from distant places. People here exchanged items and maintained relationships with communities far beyond their immediate surroundings.
The site lies within Sharjah's urban area and is walkable as you examine the outlines of ancient buildings and structures. Summer temperatures here are very hot, so visitors should plan their visit during cooler times and bring water and sun protection.
Evidence of copper production has been found here, revealing that ancient residents worked with metals and traded them. This craft activity was central to how the community sustained its economy and supplied distant markets.
