Lake Prespa, Ancient tectonic lake at Macedonia-Albania-Greece border, North Macedonia
Lake Prespa is a tectonic high-altitude lake situated at the border of North Macedonia, Albania, and Greece at about 853 meters elevation. The water body is surrounded by mountain ranges and contains several small islands that shape its geography.
The region was known as Lynkestis in ancient times and housed several settlements, including the ancient cities of Little and Great Brygeis. Long human settlement has shaped the cultural identity of the lake area.
Fishing communities along the shores continue to practice traditional methods with wooden boats and specialized nets that have been handed down through generations.
The lake is best reached through the town of Resen, which offers lodging and starting points for water activities. Visitors should note that the border location of three countries may affect access to certain areas.
Underground channels link this lake to the nearby Lake Ohrid, creating a natural filtration system through the karst mountains between the two water bodies. This hidden connection is invisible to most visitors but influences the water quality of both lakes.
