Parliament of Albania, Legislative building in Tirana, Albania
The Parliament of Albania is a unicameral legislative body with 140 members in central Tirana. The building houses plenary sessions and offices where laws are debated and voted upon.
The legislative assembly began its work in April 1921, following the Assembly of Vlorë that declared independence in 1912. The current unicameral system was established after the fall of the communist regime in 1991.
The institution carries the Albanian name Kuvendi i Shqipërisë and stands at the center of the country's political debates. Representatives are elected through a proportional system combining nationwide and regional lists.
Parliamentary sessions take place twice a year but can be called more frequently when needed. Visitors should check whether public tours or galleries are available, as access to the plenary hall is usually restricted.
The seat of the assembly has moved several times throughout history, including to Durrës and Shkodër. The current structure with exactly 140 members was set by the 1998 constitution.
