Velivar, Mountain summit in northern Albania.
Velivar is a summit in the Deshat mountain range, which runs along the border between Albania and North Macedonia, reaching 2369 meters in elevation. The massif features steep slopes and open grasslands with views across the surrounding ranges.
The mountain trails around Velivar developed over centuries as routes connecting Albanian and Macedonian communities on either side of the ridge. These passages facilitated trade and movement across difficult terrain.
Shepherds graze their flocks on the slopes around Velivar, following land-use patterns that have shaped these mountains for centuries. This pastoral work remains visible in the landscape and the way people interact with it today.
The hike starts from Ilnice village and covers about 14 kilometers round trip with roughly 1150 meters of elevation gain over about four hours. The terrain is open and exposed, so hikers should prepare for changing weather and bring plenty of water.
From September through October, hikers on these slopes find abundant wild blueberry plants dotting the higher elevations along the trail. This seasonal fruit makes the climb a special experience during those months.
