Goris, city in Armenia
Goris is a town in Syunik Province in southern Armenia, set in a highland valley at roughly 1,375 meters above sea level. Modern apartment blocks and lower traditional stone buildings stand side by side, surrounded by red and black rock cliffs that close in around the settlement.
Goris grew as a trading post in the 17th century along caravan routes that crossed southern Armenia into neighboring regions. Russian influence in the 19th century brought a more planned street layout and administrative buildings that can still be spotted around the town center.
The older part of town has low stone houses where local craftspeople still work with traditional building methods passed down over generations. Walking through these streets, you can see how the local stone shapes both the buildings and the feel of the neighborhood.
The town center is easy to walk, with shops and cafes along the main streets. Spring and autumn tend to offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring both the town and the roads leading into the surrounding mountains.
Just at the edge of town, rock formations contain caves carved directly into the stone that were once used as dwellings and storage spaces. These cave openings are visible from the main roads and date back to a period when the surrounding cliffs were the primary source of shelter for people in the area.
