Poloz Mukuch Beerhouse

The Poloz Mukuch Beerhouse sits in a two-story mansion from the 1860s featuring traditional Armenian architectural details and a distinct entrance with a commemorative bust. Today the building houses a restaurant serving Armenian dishes while preserving the original spatial layout of the structure.

The building was constructed during Russian imperial rule by Ter-Suqias Meliqyan and became a center of social gathering. It was converted to a state-run beerhouse in the Soviet period and later underwent privatization following Armenia's independence in the 1990s.

The establishment is named after Mkrtich Melkonyan, a local satirist from 1881 to 1931 who enriched Armenian storytelling traditions with his witty tales and fables. Visitors can sense today how this literary connection ties the house to the broader Armenian cultural scene.

The restaurant is located on Jivani Street in the historic Kumayri quarter and is easily reached by public transportation. It operates during evening hours on most days and provides a welcoming dining spot for both locals and visitors.

The venue preserves architectural and operational elements from different eras of Armenian history, spanning from its origins during Russian rule through the Soviet period to modern independent Armenia. The building and its continued use as a gathering place tell the story of the city through its changing historical layers.
