Lebu, Port city in Arauco Province, Chile
Lebu is a city situated along the south bank at the mouth of the Lebu River in Arauco Province. It serves as the administrative center of the region and functions as a significant fishing port.
Colonel Cornelio Saavedra founded the city in 1862 after several failed settlement attempts in the region. The establishment came after a period of conflicts that had prevented earlier colonization efforts.
The International Film Festival has been held here every summer since 2001, using local museums as screening venues. Visitors experience cinema in spaces that also serve as repositories of local history and heritage.
The city center is compact and walkable, with administrative buildings and local services located in central areas. Summer is the best time to visit, when the film festival takes place and the weather is most pleasant.
The name comes from the Mapudungun language of local indigenous people and means river. The city is known as Chile's largest artisanal fishing port, where traditional fishing methods remain in daily practice.
