Navidad Formation, Sedimentary formation near Navidad, Chile.

The Navidad Formation extends along coastal bluffs for 16 kilometers, consisting of sandstone, siltstone, and conglomerate layers reaching 200 meters in thickness.

Charles Darwin documented this geological structure during his HMS Beagle expedition in September 1834, publishing his findings about the formation in 1846.

The formation contains numerous marine fossils, including shark teeth from Odontaspis ferox and early documented Chilean crab species Cancer tyros.

Scientists access the formation through coastal areas between Boca Pupuya in the south and San Antonio in the north, extending 2 kilometers inland.

The sedimentary layers contain evidence of ancient wildfires through preserved pollen and spores, showing both Gondwana and Neotropical plant species.
