Santuario de la Naturaleza Alto Huemul, Nature reserve in San Fernando, Chile.

Santuario de la Naturaleza Alto Huemul is a nature reserve in the Andes of central Chile with dense Nothofagus forest spread across thousands of hectares. The sanctuary has marked trails for walking and basic camping facilities available for overnight stays.

A conservation group established the protected area in the late 1990s to prevent illegal logging of the ancient oak forest. This action saved one of the few remaining forests of its kind in the region from destruction.

People come here to learn about forest conservation and walk through the managed trails as part of their connection to nature. The sanctuary functions as a place where visitors experience active protection of the forest and its role in the region.

You need to get permission in advance before entering the site, and the best time to visit is during the warmer months. Plan enough time to walk the trails at a relaxed pace and explore the surroundings properly.

The reserve holds a rare stand of old Santiago oak trees that once covered large sections of the Andean foothills throughout the region. Today these ancient trees are protected here and rank among the last of their kind remaining in the area.
