Paine

Paine is a commune in Maipo Province situated at approximately 400 meters elevation in an area between two major river basins. The region spreads across agricultural land devoted mainly to watermelon cultivation.

The territory was originally settled by Picunche indigenous people before Spanish colonists arrived and established farms. It gained official city status in 1885.

The Watermelon Festival in January brings locals together to celebrate the agricultural roots of the region. This gathering shows how farming shapes the community's identity and brings people closer.

The area is primarily agricultural, so visitors should expect simple infrastructure and prepare for exploring fields and rural settlements. The best time to visit is during harvest season when local activity is most visible.

A memorial for the detained and disappeared records personal stories from the military period through architecture and remembrance. This site tells of a significant chapter in the country's recent past.
