Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel situated on a mountain ridge above the Sacred Valley.
It was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls and its primary buildings are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows.
Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered a symbol of the Inca Empire and Peruvian culture.
The site can be reached by foot, train or bus from Cusco.
Often mistakenly referred to as the 'Lost City of the Incas', it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization.
