Megatoni National Sanctuary

Megantoni National Sanctuary is a large protected area that connects high-altitude grasslands with lowland tropical forests. The sanctuary spans different ecosystems and elevations, creating a wide range of habitats.

The government established this sanctuary in 2004 to protect the biodiversity of the Urubamba River basin. This designation aimed to safeguard the region's natural resources for future generations.

Machiguenga indigenous communities have lived here for generations, shaping daily life through their inherited practices and knowledge. Visitors can observe their traditional ways and their profound connection to this land.

Access requires multi-day travel from Cusco and good physical fitness. Visitors should prepare for remote conditions and bring local guides who know the terrain well.

The Pongo de Mainique gorge within the sanctuary contains multiple waterfalls and rare bird species. This remote section remains largely unknown to most visitors, offering untouched natural landscape.
