Megatoni National Sanctuary

The sanctuary extends over 215,868 hectares of Peruvian Yungas, connecting the high-altitude puna grasslands with the lowland tropical forests of the Amazon.

The Peruvian government designated Megantoni as a national sanctuary on August 17, 2004, to safeguard the biodiversity of the Urubamba River basin.

The Machiguenga indigenous communities maintain their traditional practices within the sanctuary, considering it the birthplace of their ancestral civilization.

Visitors can reach the sanctuary by taking an 8-hour bus from Cusco to Quillabamba, followed by a 10-hour journey to Puerto de Tintiniquiato.

The Pongo de Mainique section within the sanctuary contains multiple waterfalls and serves as a habitat for Military Macaws and Andean Cock-of-the-rocks.
