Cañón del Sonche

The Cañón del Sonche is a natural canyon in northern Peru's highlands, featuring steep limestone walls that form a dramatic landscape. The gorge was carved by flowing water over millennia and remains one of the area's most striking geographical features.

The area around the canyon was inhabited by the Chachapoyas civilization before the Inca arrived and took control of the region. Archaeological remains found nearby provide evidence of these early settlements.

In the village of Huancas near the canyon, local artisans create pottery using methods passed down through generations. The craft reflects how people have adapted to living in this mountain landscape over time.

Two main viewpoints provide access to see the canyon: Mirador de Huancas and Mirador Huanca Urco, both reachable by mountain trails. Sturdy footwear and some physical fitness help make the visit more comfortable, as the routes can be steep and uneven.

Three rivers converge at one of the viewpoints, creating a rare natural intersection that becomes visible from above. This water confluence is often overlooked by visitors but represents an important geographical feature of the area.
