Empresa de Ferrocarriles Ecuatorianos, Trans-Andean railway line in Ecuador.
Empresa de Ferrocarriles Ecuatorianos is a railway line stretching 452 kilometers through Ecuador's varied terrain, linking the coastal city of Guayaquil with the capital Quito in the Andean highlands. The route passes through different elevations and landscapes, from flat coastal areas to mountainous regions.
Construction began in 1872 under President Gabriel García Moreno, and the first section between Yaguachi and Milagro opened for regular service in 1874. The project was a major step in linking different parts of the country together.
The railway connects people from different regions and allows them to exchange products and goods across the country. Visitors can see today how this connection remains important for trade and daily life between the coast and the highlands.
Following restoration work in recent years, several tourist trains have resumed operation in provinces such as Imbabura and Chimborazo. Visitors should check current schedules, as train routes may vary with the seasons and local conditions.
The most famous section, the Nariz del Diablo (Devil's Nose), is an engineering solution where the tracks zigzag through a steep mountain in an unusual pattern. This method was created to overcome an almost vertical elevation change.
