Nariz del Diablo, Mountain railway formation in Alausí Canton, Ecuador
The Nariz del Diablo railway features switchbacks along steep mountain slopes, descending 2000 feet over a distance of 10 kilometers between stations.
The construction of this railway section in the early 1900s required the labor of 2500 workers who faced extreme conditions while creating the mountain passage.
At Sibambe Station, local performers present traditional Ecuadorian dances, sharing their heritage with train passengers throughout scheduled journeys.
The train journey from Alausí to Sibambe Station takes 45 minutes, with multiple daily departures allowing visitors to plan their schedule accordingly.
Engineers designed a zigzag track pattern to navigate the triangular rock formation, requiring trains to stop and reverse direction during the descent.
