Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Rocio, Religious sanctuary in Biblián, Ecuador.

The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Rocío stands on Monte Zhalao, west of Biblian in Cañar Province. It is a Gothic-style Catholic temple whose front shows walls of granitic rock covered with wild flowering plants; the interior holds the Virgin's urn and a few very old paintings. A stairway climbs from the sanctuary to the summit of the mount.

In 1893 a drought and famine struck the region, and the parish priest of Biblián, Dr. Daniel Muñoz, placed a small image of the Virgin Mary in a grotto on Monte Zhalao. At 06:00 on Saturday 20 January 1894, as neighbours followed, the first rain fell. In 1896, during the Liberal Revolution, the image was taken to Cuenca; after the liberal victory it was named Señora de la Paz.

After the 1896 Liberal Revolution the image was taken to Cuenca, and the soldiers who credited the Virgin with ending the conflict had a mass said; she was then called "Señora de la Paz" and also "Señora Liberal" or "Chapulita". Pilgrims still come by the thousands to the urn of the Virgin, and a few very old paintings inside are held to have spiritual value for all of Biblián.

The sanctuary stands on Monte Zhalao, west of Biblán; a stairway leads from the slope up to the summit, where the city of Azogues and the Monumento Nuestra Señora de la Nube come into view. The same path is used by climbers for sport climbing, so expect walkers and climbers sharing the route.

In 1896, during the Liberal Revolution, the image was taken to Cuenca amid fighting between Conservatives and Liberals under Eloy Alfaro. After the conflict ended, a mass was held with the soldiers themselves, and the image became known as "Señora de la Paz" and also "Señora Liberal" or "Chapulita".
