Iglesia de La Balbanera, Catholic pilgrimage church in Colta, Ecuador
Iglesia de La Balbanera is a Catholic pilgrimage church in Colta, Chimborazo Province, Ecuador, built with thick adobe walls painted white and a double-arched entrance supported by four columns in a classical style. Inside, beams of capuli wood span the ceiling above the nave where services are held.
The church was founded in 1534 by Sebastián de Benalcázar and is considered the first Catholic temple built in what is now Ecuador during the Spanish colonial period. Its founding marked the beginning of organized religious life in this part of the country.
The stone carvings on the facade echo local pottery forms and the patterns of traditional shigra bags, a type of woven bag still made in the region today. These details show how indigenous craftspeople left their mark on the building's decoration.
The church is open throughout the week, so visiting outside of service times gives the most space for a calm look around. If you want to attend a service, it is worth checking ahead, as times can vary.
The building survived the 1797 earthquake that destroyed much of nearby Riobamba, keeping most of its original construction intact. This is notable because adobe structures are generally among the most vulnerable to seismic damage.
