Puyo, Commercial hub in Pastaza Province, Ecuador.
Puyo is a city in Pastaza Province set in Ecuador's Amazon region at roughly 950 meters elevation. It spreads along the Puyo River with thick rainforest coming right up to the urban edge.
The city was founded in 1899 by Dominican missionary Álvaro Valladares and members of the Canelos indigenous group. It started as a mission settlement along the Puyo River.
The population maintains strong connections with Quechua communities, who received territorial rights in 1990 and participate in local trade activities.
Several roads connect Puyo to other towns and allow exploration of the surrounding region. The nearest airport at Shell is about 10 kilometers away and serves destinations throughout the Amazon.
The Parque Etnobotánico Omaere offers guided walks through rainforest plants and their uses by local communities. At Paseo de los Monos, visitors can see rescued monkeys, turtles, and birds living in natural enclosures.
