Bahía Blanca, Port city in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina
Bahía Blanca is a port city in Buenos Aires Province in Argentina, located where the Napostá Grande River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The city has several docks and facilities for maritime commerce spread along the waterfront.
Colonel Ramón Estomba founded a military outpost here in 1828 called Fortaleza Protectora Argentina to monitor the coast. The settlement grew in the late 19th century with the expansion of railway lines and port infrastructure.
The name means "white bay" and may come from salt deposits visible along parts of the shore. Local residents often shorten the city's name to just Bahía when speaking informally.
Buses connect the city with Buenos Aires and other destinations in Patagonia, with most trips taking several hours. Comandante Espora Airport lies south of the center and offers domestic connections.
The city is home to Puerto Belgrano, a naval base from the early 20th century that remains one of the largest military port facilities in South America. Visitors can see the outer areas of the base from public roads, though access inside is restricted.
