Laguna Mar Chiquita, Wetland system in Junín Partido, Argentina.
Laguna Mar Chiquita is a large shallow lagoon in Buenos Aires Province, within Junín Partido, fed by the Salado River through a system of channels and basins. Wide beds of reeds line much of the shoreline, and the water surface changes shape depending on the season.
The lagoon was formed over many decades by repeated flooding from the Salado River, which gradually shaped the flat land around it. Those natural flood cycles left behind the water system that exists today.
Local fishers are a regular presence along the shore, passing down knowledge about the best spots to younger members of their families. For many people in the region, this lagoon is a working part of daily life, not just a natural feature.
The lagoon is easy to reach from nearby towns and has several access points along the shore for fishing or wetland viewing. Water levels can change a lot between seasons, so it is worth checking conditions before heading to a specific spot.
This lagoon sits at a higher level than two other lakes connected to the same river system, which means its water level controls how much flows downstream to the others. When it rises here, the balance across the whole connected network shifts.
