Lihué Calel National Park

This national park protects a landscape of mountain plains and plateaus with grass tussocks spread across La Pampa Province. The terrain features open grassland, rocky hills, and valleys covered with native vegetation and local shrubs.

The park was established in 1977 to protect Argentina's natural landscapes and place them under international conservation standards. This founding marked an important step in preserving this unique pampa ecosystem for future generations.

Cave paintings in Valle de las Pinturas display red and black geometric patterns left by indigenous communities roughly 1300 years ago. These artworks offer visitors a direct glimpse into the long human presence within this pampa region.

You'll need your own vehicle to reach the park, which sits roughly 230 kilometers from Santa Rosa. Bring plenty of drinking water since none is available within the grounds.

The name comes from the Mapudungun language, blending 'Lihue' meaning life with 'Calel' referring to mountains. This pairing creates the poetic meaning of Mountains of Life.
