The first parish church appeared in 1731 and grew over the decades into the present building. In 1966, the Catholic Church granted it the rank of basilica.
The crypt houses the Virgin's Chamber, where a statue brought from Cádiz in 1773 stands. Worshippers come to this room to pay their respects to the city's patron saint.
Several services take place daily, including weekday masses at 8:45, 11:45, and 7:30 in the evening (7:30 PM). Weekend celebrations draw larger crowds and add more ceremonies.
