San José Department, Administrative division in southern Uruguay
San José Department is an administrative region in southern Uruguay that combines agricultural lands, river systems, and a shoreline along the Río de la Plata. The capital, San José de Mayo, serves as the main hub for government services and local administration.
The department was established in 1816 as part of Uruguay's initial administrative structure of six districts. The region later lost territory in 1885 when a portion was separated to form Flores Department.
The demographic composition of San José includes a population of 108,309 residents, with 93 percent identifying as White and significant Black and Indigenous communities.
San José de Mayo functions as the administrative center where visitors will find government offices and local services. The region is connected by main routes and is accessible from other parts of the country.
The department maintains a structured local governance system with multiple municipalities established after 2010, each managing specific territorial subdivisions under the Intendant's leadership.
