Caazapá Department, Administrative department in southeastern Paraguay
Caazapá is an administrative department in southeastern Paraguay with rolling terrain and varied natural zones. The region extends from Atlantic rainforest to western wetlands and includes eleven municipalities.
The region emerged from Franciscan missions in the 18th century, with the San Juan Nepomuceno mission founded in 1786. It later became Paraguay's sixth administrative department in 1906.
The Mbya and Guayaki communities in the rainforest areas maintain traditions passed down through generations. These groups cultivate crops like corn, cassava, and yerba mate, shaping daily life in the forested regions.
The region has a humid tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 1°C to 37°C and frequent rainfall throughout the year. The eleven municipalities are connected by roads and accessible by car.
Australian settlers founded a socialist colony in this region during the late 1800s. Their descendants continue living in the area today, preserving this unusual chapter of local history.
