Prudentópolis, Municipal center in Central Paraná, Brazil
Prudentópolis is a municipality in central Paraná located at about 780 meters elevation in southern Brazil's hillsides. The town covers roughly 2,400 square kilometers and is home to around 50,000 residents.
Ukrainian immigrants arrived in 1895 when roughly 1,500 families from the Ternopil region settled in this area. This wave of settlement formed the foundation for the town and continues to shape its story.
The Ukrainian language has held official status alongside Portuguese since 2021, reflecting that three quarters of residents have Ukrainian roots. This heritage shapes daily life, local traditions, and the visual character of the town today.
Visitors will find churches, schools, and local services distributed throughout the town for easy access. The hilly location means some areas are best explored on foot, while getting between distant neighborhoods works best by car or local transport.
A print house run by Basilian Fathers produces publications in both Portuguese and Ukrainian. This workshop represents a rare example of bilingual printing in Brazil and connects local history with practical community needs.
