Prudentópolis, Municipal center in Central Paraná, Brazil
Prudentópolis is a municipality in central Paraná, set on a forested plateau in southern Brazil. The landscape is shaped by hills, rivers, and small waterfalls, and the town has a strongly rural character with a large population of Ukrainian descent.
In 1895, Ukrainian families from the Ternopil region settled in this area as part of a broader wave of immigration to southern Brazil. The town was named after Prudente de Morais, a Brazilian president in office at the time of its founding.
Ukrainian has been an official language alongside Portuguese since 2021, and visitors can see this reflected in church signs, local shops, and public spaces throughout the town. During religious festivals, traditional embroidery, music, and food from western Ukraine are still very much part of daily life here.
The municipality spreads across a large rural area, so having a car is the most practical way to get around, especially to reach waterfalls and more remote communities. Roads can become difficult after heavy rain, so it is worth checking conditions before heading out into the countryside.
The Basilian Fathers have run a print house here for decades, producing books and periodicals in both Portuguese and Ukrainian. This makes Prudentópolis one of the very few places in Brazil where bilingual religious publishing has continued without interruption.
