Parish Church of Our Lady of the Candles, Catholic church in Itu, Brazil
The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Candelária is a Catholic church in Itu featuring a symmetrical white stone facade, two bell towers, and ornate decorations. The building has a central entrance accessed by a staircase that leads to the main door.
The church opened in 1780 under Father João Leite Ferraz's direction, with the facade including towers and bells completed in 1831. This completion marked a turning point in the architectural appearance of Itu's main square.
The interior displays paintings by José Patrício da Silva and Father Jesuíno do Monte Carmelo, representing important examples of Brazilian Baroque and Rococo art styles. These artworks continue to define the character of the worship space today.
The church is located on Padre Miguel Square and is easy to find in the center of town. Visit early in the morning or before the evening masses to see the interior peacefully without disrupting services.
The building houses a French Cavaillè-coll pipe organ from 1883 and ceiling paintings by Italian artist Lavínia Cereda created in 1878. These two artistic treasures from different periods show the international connections of this place.
