The church structure consists of two connected octagonal buildings crowned by a square tower, featuring white and blue Portuguese tiles on its interior walls.
Constructed between 1714 and 1739, the church gained prominence when the Portuguese royal family arrived in Rio de Janeiro and chose it for royal baptisms.
Portuguese colonial architecture influences are evident in the stone and lime construction, with geometric patterns and decorative elements throughout the building.
Visitors can access the church interior during Mass celebrations, which occur regularly with Gregorian chants on the first Saturday of each month.
The church stands on Morro do Leripe, providing views of Guanabara Bay and Parque do Flamengo, marking the Rio de Janeiro landscape since the 18th century.
