The Fortress of Santa Cruz da Barra stands at the entrance of Guanabara Bay, featuring thick stone walls and multiple defensive positions overlooking the ocean.
Initially constructed in 1555 during colonial times, the fortress underwent expansions after Portuguese forces reclaimed it from French invaders in 1557.
The fortress exhibits Portuguese military engineering principles through its architectural elements, including chambers, dungeons, and the Chapel of Santa Barbara.
Visitors can access the fortress daily to explore the military structures, dungeons, and former execution areas while learning about colonial defense systems.
The fortress served as a prison for notable figures, including José Bonifácio de Andrade e Silva, and fired its last shot in 1955 at the Cruiser Tamandaré.
