Cine-Theatro Íris, Movie theater in Centro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Cine-Theatro Íris occupies the address Rua da Carioca 49-51 in Centro and displays Art Nouveau architecture with Belgian ceramic tiles and French crystal mirrors integrated throughout its rooms. The venue holds approximately 450 seats arranged to face the screen in a single main auditorium.
The building opened in 1909 as Cinematographo Soberano before being renamed during renovations in 1921. Those modernizations added a third level and reshaped the interior to suit the cinema experience that became standard in subsequent decades.
The name derives from the Roman goddess associated with rainbows and divine messages, reflecting the artistic aspirations of early cinema. Today, the ornamental interior with Belgian tiles and French mirrors speaks to the refined entertainment culture that once drew Rio's elite.
The venue continues operating under family management, ensuring regular maintenance of the historic space and its original features. Arrive early to explore the entrance area and ornamental details without feeling rushed, and check beforehand if a screening or event is scheduled.
One seat in the auditorium bears an engraving marking the regular patron who was a prominent Brazilian jurist and statesman of the early 20th century. This small memorial connects the cinema to a notable figure in Brazil's intellectual and political sphere.
